How to Create a WordPress Form that Uploads Files to Google Drive

Google Drive is a great way to store, share, and collaborate on files and documents online. WordPress is a powerful platform that lets you create and manage websites and blogs with ease. By combining Google Drive and WordPress, you can create a file-sharing system that allows your visitors to upload files directly to your Google Drive account from your website. In this tutorial, we will show you how to create a WordPress form that uploads files to Google Drive, using a free plugin called Formidable Forms. This way, you can easily collect files, images, and documents from your visitors, and access them from your Google Drive anytime and anywhere. Let’s get started!

Install and Activate Formidable Forms

The first step is to install and activate the Formidable Forms plugin on your WordPress website. Formidable Forms is a user-friendly plugin that lets you create custom forms for your website without any coding skills. With Formidable Forms, you can create a WordPress form that uploads files to Google Drive with just a few clicks.

To install and activate the plugin, you need to log in to your WordPress dashboard, go to the “Plugins” section, and click on “Add New”. Then, type “Formidable Forms” in the search bar, install the plugin, and activate it.

Set Up the Upload Form

Before you can connect your form to Google Drive, you need to set up the upload form on your website. This is the form that your visitors will use to upload files to your Google Drive account. You can create any type of form that suits your needs, such as a quote request form, a payment form, etc. Whatever you want to create is fine. You can continue this tutorial when you have your form ready.

Get an API Key

In this tutorial, we will use Zapier to connect Formidable Forms and Google Drive. Zapier is a service that allows you to integrate different apps and platforms with each other. To use Zapier, you need to give it access to both your Google Drive account and the Formidable Forms plugin. To do this, you need to create an API key in Formidable Forms using the API Webhooks add-on. This add-on is available with the Formidable Business plan and higher.

After installing the add-on, go to Formidable Global Settings API and copy the key there:

This key is required for connecting Formidable Forms with external services. Keep this tab open or copy it to your clipboard because you will need it soon.

Connect Formidable Forms and Google Drive with Zapier

To connect Formidable Forms and Google Drive with Zapier, you need to use the Zapier add-on for Formidable Forms. This add-on allows you to connect the plugin with Zapier easily. By integrating your WordPress website with Zapier, you can create forms that trigger specific actions on other platforms.

Okay, I will continue the rewrite.

Create a Zap in Zapier

A zap is a workflow that connects two or more apps and automates a task between them. In this case, we will create a zap that connects Formidable Forms and Google Drive, and uploads files from the form to the drive.

To create a zap, you need to sign up for a Zapier account and log in to your dashboard. Then, click on the “Make a Zap” button at the top right corner. You will see a screen like this:

Here, you need to choose Formidable Forms as the trigger app and Google Drive as the action app. A trigger app is the app that starts the zap, and an action app is the app that performs the task. To do this, follow these steps:

  • In the “Choose App & Event” section, type “Formidable Forms” in the search bar and select it.
  • In the “Choose Trigger Event” section, select “New Entry” as the trigger event. This means that the zap will run whenever a new entry is submitted to your form.
  • Click on “Continue”.
  • In the “Choose Account” section, click on “Sign in to Formidable Forms” and enter your API key that you copied earlier. Then, click on “Yes, Continue”.
  • In the “Customize Entry” section, select your form from the drop-down menu and click on “Continue”.
  • In the “Find Data” section, click on “Test Trigger” to fetch a sample entry from your form. You should see something like this:

This is a sample entry from your form that Zapier will use to test the connection. Make sure that the entry has a file attached to it. If not, you can go back to your website and submit a test entry with a file. Then, click on “Test Trigger” again.

  • Click on “Continue”.
  • In the “Do This…” section, type “Google Drive” in the search bar and select it.
  • In the “Choose Action Event” section, select “Upload File” as the action event. This means that the zap will upload a file to your Google Drive account.
  • Click on “Continue”.
  • In the “Choose Account” section, click on “Sign in to Google Drive” and authorize Zapier to access your Google Drive account. Then, click on “Continue”.
  • In the “Customize File” section, fill in the following fields:
  • File: Click on the icon at the right side of the field and select “File Upload URL”. This is the URL of the file that was uploaded to your form.
  • Folder: Click on the icon at the right side of the field and select or create a folder where you want to store your files in Google Drive.
  • File Name: Click on the icon at the right side of the field and select or type a name for your file. You can use any of the fields from your form as part of the file name.
  • Click on “Continue”.
  • In the “Send Data” section, click on “Test & Continue” to test the zap and upload a sample file to your Google Drive account. You should see something like this:

This means that the zap was successful and uploaded a file to your Google Drive account. You can check your Google Drive folder to see if the file is there.

  • Click on “Turn On Zap” to activate your zap and make it live.

That’s it! You have successfully created a WordPress form that uploads files to Google Drive using Formidable Forms and Zapier. Now, whenever someone submits your form with a file attached to it, it will automatically be uploaded to your Google Drive account.
